Work Related Stress

Current Climate
The Health and Safety Executive definition of stress is “the adverse reaction a person has to excessive pressure or other types of demand placed upon them.” In this current climate of cuts, job losses and threats of redundancies, responsibilities in the workplace have increased considerably and many individuals are expected to deliver the same or improved results with less staff and resources.
Recent statistics
confirm that work-related stress is widespread in the UK working population and is not confined to particular sectors or high risk jobs or industries.
• In 2007/08 an estimated 442 000 individuals in Britain, who worked in the last year, believed that they were experiencing work-related stress at a level that was making them ill, according to the Labour Force Survey (LFS).
• Estimates from the LFS indicate that self-reported work-related stress, depression or anxiety accounted for an estimated 13.5 million lost working days in Britain in 2007/08.
